Retail Spotlight: Highway Robbery Vintage

Highway Robbery Vintage is located in the South Side area of Pittsburgh on East Carson Street. The store opened 6 years ago by Kate Minton in 2011. Highway robbery strives on being both unique and affordable; the store carries garments from between the 1950s-90s that are in wearable condition. They are a multi-channel retailer, having an Etsy account and a physical location. Highway Robbery Vintage showcases a lot of their garments on their Instagram page and can be seen participating in events throughout the city like Pittsburgh Vintage Mixers, pop-up shops, and more.

When asked why she opened this store, Kate said, “Whenever I traveled I went to vintage stores in other cities and noticed that there wasn't anything like the stores I was visiting back at home. I wanted to create a store that was more day to day street wear style and felt like there was room in the Pittsburgh market for it at that time.”

The store, even though it is vintage clothing, is perfect for staying on trend. Recreating or re-vamping looks is what this store is all about. The clothes and vibe of the shop can be described as chic and urban, with a vintage twist.

Highway Robbery has a variety of merchandise, ranging from fur jackets to sports graphic t-shirts, only from previous decades, of course.

Kate says, “I think all stores have their own vibe and personality, and that's what makes them all special and different. I try to curate an inventory that is really wearable and can easily be mixed with modern items you already own. I also try to keep the atmosphere as friendly and accessible as possible. I'm continually working on our online presence as well by making as many items as possible available on our website and posting new products on our Instagram very consistently.”

Think the store is the right one for you? Or maybe you need to see it to believe it… Well then go and check it out, you’ll probably be greeted by Kate herself.
