Valentine’s Day is just around the corner! Some couples like the cliché chocolate, giant teddy bear and romantic candle-lit dinner, but that may not be the best way to celebrate with your lover. Here are five different itineraries, with something exciting for every kind of couple.
Goofy & Fun-loving
You and your boo love to laugh and don’t take yourselves too seriously. Head down to the Waterfront for dinner, a stand up, and games! There’s a ton of restaurants at the Waterfront, but Yokoso’s chefs put on a hibachi show that never gets old (onion volcanos!!!!). After dinner, walk across the street to the Pittsburgh Improv Comedy Club. On V-Day, TuRae Gordon (of NBC’s Stand Up and HBO’s Comedy Wings) will be doing a hilarious set. Afterwards, head next door to Dave and Buster’s for a friendly (yet still very heated) skeeball competition and fruity cocktails.

Adventurous
Bowling, mini golf, going to the movies – they’re all fun, but the same old, same old. One of the trendiest things to do now is going to an ‘escape room,’ where you’re locked in a room for a set period of time and need to solve a series of riddles to get out. This is also a super fun option for new couples or double dates! For dinner, go down the street to Mallorca for authentic Spanish and Portuguese food like seafood paella, picanha, and chorizo. After dinner, catch a show! Comedian Jeff Dunham headlines at the PPG Paints arena, or see The Absolute Brightness of Leonard Pelkey at the City Theatre.

Artistic and Creative
You two love culture and expression, so have your special day reflect that! Start with a trip to a must-see – Randyland - a beautiful, colorful, eccentric house and garden that brings happiness to people of all ages (bring your nice camera!). Afterwards, take a short ride to James Gallery in the West End to see the current exhibition, Uncommon Thread by Janice Lessman-Moss (tip – James Gallery closes at 5!). Then, take a quick walk over to the West End Overlook for a beautiful view of the city. Enjoy delicious American Fare in a modern and cozy setting at new restaurant, Floor 2, inside of the Fairmont hotel, and walk downstairs to Andy’s Wine Bar for a post-dinner glass of vino. And if you have some extra cash, spend the night in one of the city’s most luxurious hotels!

On A Budget
Okay, so, budget is really tight this year. That’s okay! We’ve all been there. You can still have an amazing Valentine’s day. Have a bite at the incomparable Doce Taqueria in the South Side – incredible tacos at great prices. Take a trip up the incline (price of bus fare!) to the Grandview overlook for the most popular view of the city (and if you bring a bottle of spiked Sprite, I won’t tell). Afterwards, see a movie at Southside Works or instead, head home for Netflix and cookie baking.

Laid Back and Chill
Perhaps you’ve spent a plethora of V-days together, or just like to keep it low key.
Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens is by far one of the most beautiful destinations in Pittsburgh. Seasonally, Phipps changes their collection of stunning floral arrangements, exotic tropical plants, Chihuly blown glass, and artwork. Their current exhibition is the Orchid and Tropical Bonsai Show (CMU and Pitts students – you get in for free!). If you and your beau are inseparable, walk over the Schenley Park Bridge to see all the love locks and attach your own, complete with you and your beloved’s initials. A short walk away is dinner at The Porch At Schenley, which boasts inventive American dishes with locally grown ingredients in a fresh, friendly atmosphere.
